This 1854 New Orleans $3 gold coin was minted to cover the cost of a sheet of one-hundred stamps at the time, eliminating the need to make change and allowing transactions to take place quickly. The $3 gold coins were only minted from 1854 to 1889. This well-struck 1854-O New Orleans mint $3 gold coin is one of the 1,000 believed to exist today. Coins exhibiting all details, including the distinct 'O' mint mark, clearly defined are rare. This piece boasts impressive overall detail with lingering traces of luster on both sides. The uniform olive gold coloration, dirt around devices, and the CAC endorsement collectively hint at its originality and quality.

Among the 1,000 surviving coins, most are graded Extra Fine or lower, with only a few earning the coveted CAC sticker. High circulation attrition was inevitable as the New Orleans mint produced coins destined for commerce along the bustling trade corridor of the Mississippi River. Almost Uncirculated (AU) examples constitute only a small portion of the surviving lot, and these coins, being the sole $3 New Orleans examples, are consistently in demand. Even a lower-end example would command a price well into four figures, and they rarely appear at auction. It is not likely you will see an AU CAC endorsed example soon. No AU50 CAC piece has changed hands in over 13 years. Though lower grade XF45 PCGS CAC examples sell consistently for nearly $5,000 08/23 ST and $5,000 09/22 LE. Auction records indicate the demand and scarcity of these coins.

Notably, only one die variety is known, but early and late die state examples exist due to die lapping at the mint. This piece represents an early die state, characterized by more details on the ribbon at the base of the wreath. Housed in a powder blue PCGS 4.4 holder.
