Possibly one of the scarcest survival rates at 0.01% for a Liberty Head Gold Quarter Eagle. Out of a mintage of 1,283,788, approximately 100 remain in existence. The Old Reverse type is rare across all grades and more elusive than its New Reverse counterpart. A straightforward method to differentiate between the Old Reverse and New Reverse types is by examining the 'O' in 'OF'. The Old Reverse features an oval 'O', whereas the New Reverse displays a round 'O'. Additionally, a distinctive characteristic of the Old Reverse is that the 'CA' in 'AMERICA' touch. Old Reverse types are seldom encountered and consistently command a premium. Despite over 1.2 million pieces being struck, the majority were of the New Reverse type.

We consider the 1861 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle Old Reverse to be significantly undervalued. This specimen is a remarkable GEM, boasting an exceptional level of preservation. Its coloration showcases a vibrant honey gold hue, with a depth of color rarely observed. The rolling mint luster is strikingly evident when held nearly blinding. The fields exhibit some reflectivity and prominently feature the sharp strike. Adding to its appeal, the coin possesses added character with a unique die clash below Liberty's nose.
