The 1866 Liberty Head Double Eagle gold coin is always popular as the first year of the short-lived Type Two design of Double Eagles. In 1866, the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" was added to the reverse, marking the introduction of the Type Two design. During the Civil War years, the public became accustomed to the convenience of paper money, leading to rare encounters with these coins in circulation. They were primarily available for purchase from banks and bullion brokers at a premium. Consequently, a notable portion of the 1866 mintage was exported and melted down. By the late 1930s, as numismatic interest in the denomination surged, these coins had already been circulating for decades, resulting in significant wear and attrition.

This attractive piece is destined for the cabinet of a Double Eagle connoisseur. From a mintage of almost 700,000 only 3,010 remain today. The lightly abraded golden orange surfaces have traces of proof like reflectivity in the sheltered areas. This remarkable specimen exhibits friction on the high points of the design elements, while the lustrous surfaces display the anticipated minor abrasions for the grade. No PCGS has sold recently but a NGC AU58 sold for $5,520 05/23 HA, whilst a NGC AU55 just sold 05/24 HA for $4,800.
