Indian Head Half Eagle gold pieces were struck from 1908 to 1916, and again in 1929. Along with the quarter eagle, these pieces are the only circulated coins with recessed designs. They were the last of their denominations to be struck for circulation as gold prices rose up due to the economic unrest caused by WWI. After the war, most gold coins struck were double eagles, which were used for international transactions.

Boasting itself in a certified old green label holder, this wonderful coin is a premium example of the 1916-S $5. With alluring pink honey gold as seen over the lovely mint luster, the 1916-S goes even further as an incredibly rare date. With a CAC Price Guide of $7,200 and non-CAC MS63 selling most recently for $5,000+, and the present example superbly choice for a MS63, we see strong competition for this lot. Minted at San Francisco Mint only makes this specimen more unique and superb. The coin is well struck with salient obverse and reverse details throughout.
