Struck during the opening year of the Civil War, the 1861-S Liberty Head quarter eagle is a historically important and firmly established rarity, with a mintage of just 24,000 pieces and an estimated survival of approximately 85 examples today, most of which reside in long-held collections. This example exhibits a soft, even medium-gold coloration and is consistent with long-term storage and circulation without signs of cleaning or artificial surface disturbance. As a Civil War–era San Francisco gold issue, the 1861-S quarter eagle is rarely encountered in any straight-graded condition, and especially elusive at this level, with PCGS reporting just a single coin at the grade as a Pop 1 at PCGS and 2 at CAC, we love this date. Having sold more of this CAC Civil War $2.5 date than any other, see our G06 PCGS CAC, VG10 NGC CAC, F15 PCGS CAC, F15 CACG, safe to say we know this date, recommend this date, and they have always had tremendous demand. A VG10 PCGS CAC sold for $1,880 01/15 HA, whilst VG10 NGC CAC we sold recently sold for more.
