The 1861-S Liberty Head Quarter Eagle, graded F15 by CACG(CAC), is a scarce Civil War–era gold issue with a mintage of just 24,000 coins and an estimated survival of roughly 85 pieces across all grades. This example exhibits richly original color and pleasing surface texture characteristic of undisturbed, lightly circulated San Francisco gold. Together, both sides form a well-balanced palette of amber, honey, and copper-orange, offering strong visual harmony and exceptional originality for the grade. No auction records exist in F15, though a lower grade VG10 PCGS CAC sold for $1,880 01/15 HA, underscoring the rarity and collector demand for wholesome, problem-free survivors of this elusive San Francisco issue. We love this date and have sold similarly graded examples including a G06 PCGS CAC, a VG10 NGC CAC, a F15 PCGS CAC. Safe to say we recommend this date and coin.
