A Top-Pop Braided Hair Cent with Traces of Mint Red
The 1851 Braided Hair Large Cent is represented here by a particularly attractive high-grade example, combining strong underlying luster with unusually appealing color. Glimpses of original orange-red remain tucked around the stars, legends, and protected design recesses, contrasting beautifully against luminous steel-gray, burgundy-brown, and subtle violet-toned surfaces. The surfaces possess the smooth, pleasing character expected of a premium Gem, and the remaining mint color gives the coin considerably more visual presence than a typically toned Brown example. The Braided Hair design represented the final chapter of the classic large cent, which would be discontinued after 1857 as the United States transitioned to the smaller copper-nickel cent. PCGS lists a Price Guide value of $1,750 and CAC at $1,900, with the last comp for $1,647 09/26 HA & $2,928 07/26 HA, both standard but one nicer than the other. The $1,647 did not have a lustrous attractive pop, whilst a more similar looking 1852 1C MS66 BN PCGS CAC sold for $2,138 07/26 GC. This is an exceptionally eye-appealing Braided Hair cent whose traces of original red and rich multicolored patina elevate it well beyond the appearance normally associated with the Brown designation. This is an incredibly attractive example surrounded by ample luster, and represent tremendous value.
