Pedigreed to an original mint set that sold at Christie’s Auction in May 1989 belonging to the Texas Collection of United States Coins for over $100,000 RAW. It then sold at RARCOA auction the following year 1990 as “flawless, reflective with satin smooth finish, as creamy white obverse and iridescent blue-green reverse.” It was described as the finest graded 30 years ago and is so today, subsequently selling for over $100,000 again a year later no accident. Since 1990 the coin traded privately until it was then in the Knoxville Collection, one of the best type sets ever formed, selling two decades later in 2005 for over $300,000.
At MS67 in the entire Liberty Seated Dollar series spanning from 1840 to 1873, there have just been 4 known and graded at the unattainable ms67 level with none grading higher in all dates! Two belong to the Hansen collection, whilst another a permanent set registry, thus leaving this as the only available ms67 pcgs to dictate prices.
1866 $1 motto as a date is significantly important as a type coin as it is the start of the with motto series. No known no motto 1866 $1 exist except for two that costs over $5 million if ever available. This is literally the best example of any seated dollar in existence. Interestingly this coin is also appropriate for religious collectors as it is also the first official $1 for circulation that incorporated the IN GOD WE TRUST MOTTO. Looking at comparables there has never been a ms67 in modern history sale except for private sales. A ms65 examples sold for $79,313 in 2014 with no ms66 or ms67 sales from either company. Here is a unique opportunity to find an original mint set 1866 $1 example. Two decades later once again an opportunity has risen not just for the finest 1866 $1 but also the finest liberty seated dollar in all dated and all grades.
