The 1902-S Morgan Dollar, minted in San Francisco, is notoriously difficult to find in high grades, especially with the desirable eye appeal that collectors seek. It is far scarcer in top condition than the Philadelphia or New Orleans Morgans struck in the same year. As the lowest-mintage Morgan of the 20th century, this coin is a true rarity in superior condition. The CAC population is even more limited, with just 13 examples in this grade and only 3 finer with huge price jump. High-grade pieces are rarely available, and when they do appear, they command a significant premium.
Subtle iridescent toning around the edges reveals radiant luster, while the coin itself is pristine, exhibiting no marks and flawless satiny surfaces with no discernible imperfections. This Morgan Dollar is remarkably well-preserved, with a strong strike that shows close to no weakness. As a formidable condition rarity, it would be a standout addition to any advanced Morgan collection, especially considering the next grade—MS67+—is out of reach for most, commanding $100,000. Collectors of Morgan dollars are aware of how difficult it is to find this semi-key date in GEM grades. No MS66 PCGS CAC has sold since 2011 but a most recent MS66+ PCGS CAC sold for $24,000 06/24 ST, which is an inferior coin in our opinion. For those who pursue only the finest Morgan Dollars, this is an absolute must-have. There is simply no other 1902-S like it.
