Certain coins distinguish themselves as GEM specimens, embodying rarity, allure, and exceptional eye appeal within a single package. The 1855 Half Cent Proof 65 BN, showcased as the PCGS Plate Coin, perfectly fulfills these criteria. All 1855 half cents, whether struck as proofs or for commerce, were from Cohen-1 dies. Business strike examples are available, even in nice Mint State condition, but proofs are scarce and are often encountered with spots. The present GEM displays powder-blue and plum-red toning with wild highlights. An impressive choice proof, featuring mirrored fields surrounding sharply detailed design motifs, illuminates why this coin is considered the epitome with no superior counterpart in any classification. The strike is exceptional! Given the remarkably low mintage of only 40 coins, it becomes clear why encountering a GEM of this type may be a rare event over the next ten to twenty years. Nearly every proof Braided Half Half cent has different varying levels of rarities with some mintages as low as mintage of 4 or 5 whilst others in the hundreds, as such these need to individually looked at. 1855 1/2C Proof is an incredibly rare date unlike the 1856 and 1857 1/2c proof date which have mintages in the 200's, relatively speaking. Coins that stand alone like 1855 Proof Half Cent offers no comparable or recent sales for the past 15 years. Given the price to rarity ratio, we believe these are great buys especially with a high $16,500 Price Guide.
