The 1862-S Liberty Head quarter eagle is a pivotal rarity in U.S. numismatics, combining historical significance as a Civil War-era gold coin with an exceptionally low survival rate. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, its mintage of only 8,000 pieces has yielded approximately 80 surviving examples in all grades today. In Mint State, this issue is virtually unobtainable, with Choice AU specimens such as this one offering a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire a well-preserved example of this elusive issue. According to auction data, the 1862-S ranks as the 10th rarest quarter eagle by number of appearances in public auctions. This example, graded AU-55, features superb eye appeal, with original surfaces, no distracting marks, and lustrous yellow-gold fields. It is boldly detailed, with only slight wear on the eagle’s wings accounting for the assigned grade, and is free of the heavy contact marks often seen on coins from this era. With only one CAC-approved AU-58 selling in surrounding grade approximately 5 years ago, acquiring one today in AU58 will cost at least double than this AU55 PCGS CAC which has a Price Guide of $10,000, safe to say we believe CAC example for this issue represent excellent value. Its Civil War-era issuance further increases its historical value, making it a highlight of any advanced collection of U.S. gold coinage.
