This 1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar represents the final year of the short-lived Reeded Edge subtype bearing the “50 CENTS” denomination—a transitional design born from the Mint’s pioneering use of steam-powered coinage beginning in 1836. Although the 1836 issue is far less frequently encountered, the 1837 stands as the more accessible and widely chosen representative for type sets, sought after by collectors for both its relative availability and its historical significance. This particular example is a superb survivor, showcasing a rich, original silver-gray base with vibrant album-style peripheral toning—amber-gold, soft olive, and russet hues encircle the obverse stars and rim, while hints of violet and blue iridescence add depth and originality. The reverse features a satiny cartwheel luster beneath concentric rings of goldenrod, bronze, and faint lavender-blue, particularly attractive near the denomination. The eagle is fully struck, with fine detail in the wings, shield, and claws, and the coin's overall preservation suggests careful album storage. Recent auction results underscore the market demand for this issue, with NGC-certified pieces realizing $1,560 04/25 ST in MS61 and $1,512 03/24 HA in PCGS - both untoned examples.
