Possibly Finest Known. The 1863-S Liberty Seated Dime, struck at the San Francisco Mint during the height of the Civil War, stands as a true condition rarity within the series—an elusive prize in any grade and genuinely rare in Mint State preservation. From a mintage of 157,500 coins, fewer than 250 estimated survivors remain across all conditions, with Uncirculated examples representing the pinnacle of scarcity and desirability. This particular specimen is further distinguished by its CAC Gold approval (POP 1/0)—the sole example to receive this elite endorsement—confirming its absolute superiority in both technical quality and visual appeal. The obverse glows with soft silvery-white brilliance, accented by a delicate ring of olive-gold and amber toning along the upper rim, gracefully blending into hues of champagne and pale russet. Frosted texture adorns the seated Liberty figure, shield, and devices, offering bold contrast against the reflective, satin-like fields, while the strike exhibits crisp detailing throughout. On the reverse, bright silvery surfaces with intact frosty mint bloom are complemented by a gradient of golden-bronze toning at the left periphery, shading into steel-blue and soft gray highlights across the center. Swirling cartwheel luster radiates across both sides, enhancing the balanced interplay of silver brilliance and multicolored toning. A remarkable survivor of the era, this piece represents an exceptional opportunity for the advanced collector seeking one of the finest known examples of this rare San Francisco issue.

This Gem survivor firmly positions itself among the elite echelon of known specimens. The only other example with competing claims to the Finest is the Simpson/BigMo specimen, now part of the D.L. Hansen Collection graded MS65+ PCGS CAC that sold for $47,000 07/20 LE which has a Price Guide today of $60,000. In our opinion this coin looks as choice as the aforementioned piece at the very least with the added benefit of being part of 3 major collections - Frog Run Farm, Reed Hawn and Allan Lovejoy, aside ofcourse the Gold CAC.
