The 1862-S Liberty Head Half Eagle is a standout rarity within the $5 gold series, struck at the San Francisco Mint during the height of the American Civil War from a remarkably small mintage of just 9500 pieces. With the majority of these coins lost to circulation in the gold-hungry Western economy, surviving examples are exceptionally scarce, particularly those retaining original, problem-free surfaces. This important Civil War issue is recognized as an extreme condition rarity, with PCGS estimating a survival of only 50 specimens across all grades. The example offered here, certified PCGS VG10 with CAC approval, stands as the only coin reported at this grade by both PCGS and CAC. Auction appearances are infrequent, reflecting the rarity of this date in any collectible condition; notably, a lower grade VG08 PCGS CAC sold for $8,700 02/23 HA and a non-CAC lower grade VG08 PCGS example sold for $10,020 10/21 HA. The CAC values are undervalued in our opinion, as a clear two tier market exists for this issue. Whilst PCGS quotes a Price Guide of $12,000. This piece exhibits completely original, problem-free surfaces, showcasing a rich, warm honey-gold hue with deeper olive-bronze and reddish-gold undertones settled gracefully into the design recesses. 1 of only 12 CAC approved examples in all grades! Despite expected wear from active commercial use, the coin retains bold detail and shows strong appeal.
