This 1868 Liberty Seated Dollar is an exceptionally rare and under-appreciated gem in the series. With a mintage of just 162,100, many of these coins were exported, making high-grade survivors incredibly scarce. Only an estimated 50 examples exist in grades 60 or better. 1868 $1 is rarer than almost all with Motto dates except for the 1870 to 1873 $1 rarities. This particular specimen boasts brilliant, reflective, nearly prooflike fields and sharp, lustrous devices, with both sides displaying pristine silver surfaces and no evidence of toning. With a PCGS population of just 6 in this grade and only 4 finer, and 4 in this grade at CAC and just 2 finer, safe to say these are rare. It is an incredibly difficult date to find finer than MS63. Seated Dollar with CAC approval are very tough and this coin represents the best value for money as in MS65 PCGS CAC this would cost over a $100,000 though no CAC are approved in MS65 but are in MS66 and would cost considerably more. No CAC or non-CAC example has sold since 2012, whilst an NGC MS65 which we find this more choice sold for $31,200 12/20 ST. CAC Price Guide $30,000.
