Struck as commemorative to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the L.A purchase, this piece is one of the only few gold coin commemoratives ever struck by the U.S unlike silver commems. There are two varieties, one portrait features Thomas Jefferson, as he was the president during the purchase, and the second variety of William McKinley, as he was the president just before the coin was struck and also just before he was assassinated. 17,500 pieces were struck, and most survived, as such finding high grade examples are plenty. At PCGS MS67 CAC, comps are consistently above and around $3,000. A great historical rarity.
