The 1877-S double eagle is a fascinating late-Type II Liberty Head issue from the height of San Francisco’s role in converting vast quantities of Western gold into federal coinage, and this PCGS MS62+ CAC example stands out as an especially attractive representative of the date. Struck from a mintage of 1,735,000 pieces, an estimated 8,500 examples survive today across all grades, with higher-quality certified pieces remaining popular among collectors. Both sides are fully struck with bold central detail. Rich frosty golden-orange luster blankets the surfaces and rolls evenly across the expansive fields, giving the coin vibrant cartwheel energy and a fresh Mint State appearance. The obverse shows warm honey-gold color accented by deeper orange highlights, while the reverse mirrors this originality with glowing frost and remarkably sharp detail throughout the eagle and denomination. Particularly impressive for a conditionally challenging San Francisco double eagle, the fields are exceptionally smooth for the assigned grade, with only minor scattered abrasions that remain well within the tolerance for the lofty MS62+ level and are notably less distracting than usually seen on large-format gold of this era. The eye appeal is far stronger than most survivors, easily justifying the CAC endorsement and positioning the coin as a premium-for-grade example. No recent public sales except 4 years ago for $9,000 and $7,200 in 2022; however, since then more recently another example sold for $8,504 07/25 GC aligning well with the current PCGS Price Guide value of $8,500.
