The majority of surviving 1874 Indian Head Cents are typically found only in circulated grades. This semi-key date is scarce in mint state, with examples boasting strong red coloration commanding a premium and seldom appearing on the market. The absence of updated price guides provides some indication of the rarity of these premium GEMs making their way to market. Estimated survival stands at around 225 pieces, with less than 0.02% designated as having the color red (RD) designation.

This CACG-certified 1874 Indian Head Cent, graded MS66 RD, is among the highest-ranking specimens, with only two finer examples, neither of which bear CAC endorsement. Among the five other CAC endorsed pieces, we firmly believe this sharply struck specimen stands out as one of the finest, if not the finest known. The strong strike is displayed immaculately over both sides. The vibrant and attractive red coloration exhibits a strong cartwheel effect when held, epitomizing the RD designation. The surfaces are pristine, devoid of any distracting marks, carbon spots, or fly specks, ensuring a captivating viewing experience. No MS66 CAC comparable exists. A PCGS CAC MS65+ RD sold for $9,000 at auction 01/23 HA, whilst the last two comparable examples at MS66 CAC sold were $18,000 08/19 HA & $27,025 01/15 HA. This example is of equal quality from CACG stringent grading standards and at auction should do well.
