Conditional Rarity & Rare Civil War Double Eagle issue. Whilst the S.S. Republic disrupted a lot of the population report and rarities of liberty double eagles, the 1862-S remains "elusive in Mint State." With a PCGS estimated ONLY 16 in all uncirculated grades, this by all standards is a conditional rarity beyond reasoning for $20. Having a double eagle uncirculated pop in all unc with under 20 is truly a rarity. At MS61 only 4 are CAC approved and only 3 finer.

The last CAC sale was an NGC MS61 CAC that is clearly inferior with tremendous amount of hits and abrasions sold for $22,800 01/2022 HA, whilst the last PCGS MS61 CAC sold all the way back in in 2013 nearly a decade ago for $23,500 06/13 HA. An NGC MS62 just sold for $31,200 02/2022 HA, and having compared both coins side by side, we still think this is superior. This example, absolutely fresh and graded from an old time collection exhibits nearly no bag-marks as commonly seen for the grade with minimal to no surface abrasions. In fact there are still some dirt remnants seen on the reverse, a clearly un-touched historical beauty with tremendous luster for the grade. We feel PCGS was a bit harsh and we can see this this being upgraded. Any finer than this is a near impossibility with CAC approval.
