A thoroughly undervalued civil war quarter eagle from a mintage of 24,000. Most were lost to time due to the Civil War effort and it is estimated that only 85 exists today in all grades. 1861-s $2.5 condition census start at AU58 and one rarely finds an opportunity to acquire such a coin. A very popular coin. This offered example has no ticks, hits or marks. In fact it is mark free that we surmise it must have been a pocked piece or kept by someone who understood its rarity. Only 85 coins are known! No recent comps exist except for one a decade ago. A more recent comp is a VG10 that sold for $1,880 and a XF40 for $1,260. A lovely example with slight tan toning.
