1795 Half Cent with Lettered Edge originates from a mintage of 139,690, with only an estimated 1,000 examples remaining today. The 1795 Half Cent offers a wealth of collecting intrigue, known for its numerous varieties that capture the early experimental spirit of the U.S. Mint. Among these varieties are the heavy and light-weight planchets, Punctuated Date, No Pole, Lettered Edge, and Plain Edge versions, with some struck on cut-down large cents and Talbot, Allum & Lee tokens. The earliest coins were minted on 104-grain planchets with a lettered edge, but due to rising copper costs, later coins weighed 84 grains and featured a plain edge. This example is an important key date especially in an undamaged, original state, as most survivors show significant issues. The coin shows strong details and we can see the outline and dates clearly. The reverse displays a spot likely due to an improper alloy mix that is not pronounced in hand. With a PCGS population of only 6, this coin is both scarce and significant, representing one of the first denominations minted by the newly established U.S. Mint. PCGS Price Guide $875.
