The 1863 Liberty Seated Half Dollar is a rare and captivating piece of Civil War-era coinage, with a mintage of just 503,200 and an estimated survival of only 900 examples—representing a mere 0.179% of its original production. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this issue is notable for its exceptional strike quality and visual appeal, contrasting with the Mint’s focus on producing Indian Cents to meet wartime demand. Interestingly, more Half Dollars were minted in San Francisco that year, an unusual occurrence for 19th-century coinage, yet Philadelphia examples are generally found in higher grades due to better preservation. Mint State specimens are particularly elusive, with PCGS certified only this POP 1 example graded MS65+ with only 5 finer in total, and CAC certifying just two finer examples finer. This exact example sold previously twice, $9,750 12/22 DL and $10,281 10/21 LM. This coin features stunning natural hues, including golden, amber, silver-gray, and delicate champagne tones. With frosty luster, rarity, and historical significance and a Price Guide of $13,000, this POP 1 premium gem represents true Numismatic prestige.
