1861 $5 Clark Gruber AU55 PCGS
Colorado Gold
Struck with the Liberty Half Eagle in mind, this important $5 Clark Gruber Territorial issue features a proud PIKES PEAK on Liberty's tiara, representing its connection to Colorado and her territory. On the reverse, the legend proclaims CLARK GRUBER & CO DENVER, whilst liberty's portrait slightly different from the federal liberty half eagle we are accustomed to. First struck in 1860, the issues of Clark, Gruber & Co. were higher in purity at a gold value 1% above that of federal coins of the same denomination, so that they can thwart any accusations of inferior products. The present coin is a genuine and absolutely real connection to America's daring ways back in the days as well as entrepreneurship at its finest.
The offered example is deeply collected and a favorite for all territorial and U.S numismatic aficionados. Struck at the pinnacle of the Civil War, this example features uncommonly sharp denticles as well as a near fully struck eagle and its feathers. Attractive for the grade with no marks noted, this coin is patinated with beautiful green-gold hue, as original as one can hope for. With a price guide of $15,500, and near condition census grade, there are no relevant comp for uncleaned examples as 1 subpar example has sold in the past decade.
