1859-S $2.5 MS62 PCGS
1859-S $2.5 MS62 PCGS
Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
Superb underrated sleeper. 1859-S $2.5 firstly had a paltry mintage of just 15,200, secondly it is a first year issue and the first to be struck at San Francisco mint, thirdly most did not survive the test of time and many were melted. As such only 85 are known today in all grades and conditions. On top of all of that, many were not high grade and an estimated of only 5 unique examples exist in UNC. The present example is a PCGS Pop 2 with a Price Guide of $10,000. No example has sold in the past decade. The same applies to examples graded finer, which are all locked up. The present specimen is extremely well struck with lustrous whispering yellow and is attractive for the grade. No major marks are seen or worth mentioning. Overall an extremely pleasing example for an incredibly rare San Francisco first year issue.
