Scarcest New Orleans $2.5 from the 50's and a great sleeper date, known only to specialist. 1856-O $2.5 from a mintage of 21,100 only 125 are known today in all grades. Of the remaining survivors most lack eye appeal and are close to never original. This present example firstly unlike many others is fully struck. Even to the most discerning collectors who value strike, the details of the lady liberty's hair and the details of the feather on the eagle are full. This attractive yellow-gold example has but the slightest of wear on liberty's cheek and escaped heavy commerce before a collector likely saved this. No AU58 sale has taken part for over 12 years! And certainly NO CAC sale as well. Finer than AU58 there are a few unc, PCGS estimates 6, and a CAC example would cost close to $50K+ for the next CAC MS63 if available. Because of no AU58 sales for 12 years, PCGS has not yet updated their $5,000 price guide. A beat up NGC MS60 that is clearly a C coin sold for $6,900 03/21 HA.
