A paltry mintage of 3,178 1853 Quarter Eagles were minted in Dahlonega of which 90 are known today. This date is incredibly rare and more valuable than its counterpart from the mint. Anything finer than AU and this becomes incredibly tough to find. While 1 auction comp occurs on average every 12 years for a particular date, in au50 pcgs an example sold in 2019 for $6,600. While an au55 pcgs, an example that has quite a few abrasions sold in 2020 for $7,200, with a record of $6,900 all the way back in 2009 as the second comp. The offered example is one of the most attractive 1853-D $2.5. A dual sided deeply toned example. The obverse is no doubt proof-like, as per Doug Winter "I have seen a small number of 1853-D quarter eagles with semi-reflective surfaces. This texture is completely different in appearance to the surfaces usually seen on Dahlonega quarter eagles from this era. These coins may have been struck immediately after the dies were (re)polished to remove rust." Whilst the reverse has an attractive deep copper-brown-to purple toning. Overall very well struck with excellent eye appeal for this Southern $2.5 Gold coin.
