Liberty Head Eagle

The 1851 Liberty Head eagle is an underrated Philadelphia issue from the pre–Civil War era, notable for its limited overall survival of 225 coins extant across all grades. While the influx of California gold expanded the nation’s bullion reserves, most of that metal was funneled into double eagle production, leaving the ten-dollar denomination comparatively scarce today, particularly within the No Motto subtype. This About Uncirculated example retains a pleasing, original golden-orange coloration with subtle copper-gold accents that gather around the devices, creating natural depth and contrast. The eye appeal and color is absolutely phenomenal. Finding such an attractive toned eagle is seldom seen. Light marks and circulation friction are present but typical for the grade and do not detract from the overall eye appeal. As a date, the 1851 becomes increasingly difficult in higher states of preservation, and this AU example offers an attractive and historically significant representation of early Liberty Head gold coinage. CAC Price Guide $3,500 but was $3,900 and is a pop 1 and only 15 finer. In fact, we see no 1851 $10 CAC sale since 2023. Nothing in 2024, 2025 or 2026. Even a more common by a factor of 3, but still rare coin like 1849 $10 in AU53 PCGS CAC would cost about $3,750 today.
