Classic Head Quarter Eagle
Ever popular Classic Head Quarter Eagle, 1839 $2.5 has long been a favorite for gold collectors. With only 115 known today in all grades, 1839 $2.5 unlike like other Classic Head $2.5, which span from 1834-1839, has the lowest mintage from any other Philly Mint where 1834-1838 were in the hundreds of thousands. Despite being in similar mintage to 1839-C, 1839-D and 1839-O, 1839-P $2.5 is still roughly 1/5 the value of other 1839 $2.5 Branch Mint issues in similar grades, despite having half the number of survivors than the other popular 1839 mints. So by all accounts, we would call 1839 $2.5 an UNDERVALUED issue. The current example is an exquisitely toned example, likely from a leather pouch or similar. No toned example has sold. A XF40 NGC sold for $1,800 11/21 which was processed, a PIN scratched VF35 PCGS for $1,140 10/21 which should not have been straight graded. XF40 and higher sell for $2,000+. VF35 PCGS Price Guide $1,750.
