1819 1C N-8 MS63 BN PCGS EX NAFTZGER-DENMAN

The 1819 N-8 Small Date Large Cent, graded MS63 BN by PCGS and pedigreed to the Naftzger-Denman Collection, is an attractive early Mint State example of this popular Matron Head issue, struck from the dies in their early states. Both sides display an appealing blend of golden-brown, olive, steel-brown and subtle reddish-copper toning, with considerable lighter golden color remaining through the protected fields and around the devices, lending the coin considerably more visual character than the typical uniformly brown survivor. The obverse is sharply struck for the variety, with Liberty's portrait retaining strong definition through the hair curls, coronet and facial features, while the surrounding stars and denticles are notably well delineated. The reverse is similarly bold, with crisp lettering and excellent definition throughout the individual leaves and berries of the wreath. Light scattered contact and mellow surface texture are consistent with the assigned grade, yet neither side exhibits a singularly distracting abrasion, and traces of underlying mint bloom remain evident beneath the variegated patina. The combination of an early die state, strong strike, pleasing color and distinguished provenance gives this piece considerable appeal to the specialist in early American copper. The Naftzger pedigree is particularly meaningful for large cents, as the collection assembled by noted specialist R. E. “Ted” Naftzger Jr. became one of the most celebrated holdings of American large cents, adding an important layer of collectability to this already desirable N-8 Small Date example.
