1808/7 50C AU50 PCGS CAC
1808/7 50C AU50 PCGS CAC
Capped Bust Half Dollar
"In 1808, mint employees took an old, unused die from 1807, punched an 8 over the 7, and began striking coins. The result is Overton 101, the only overdated die variety of 1808. The overdate is clearly visible, with the serif of the 7 visible on the left side of the top of the final 8; the horizontal bar and diagonal stem of the 7 can be seen inside the 8." A superb and popular date, the present example like many other 1808/7 posses heavy clash mark. These interesting die-break attract great attention and beauty to the piece. Unfortunately, as a result of worn dies, these coins typically are not well detailed and lack eye-appeal. The present example has wondrous eye-appeal thanks to some rainbow peripheral toning coupled with a lack of any detracting marks or hits. Though luster is scarcely seen on 1808/7, luster peers through the peripheries on this example. At AU50 CAC, no example has sold in the past 8 years and the only comp is also an attractively toned AU55 PCGS CAC that sold 08/16 for $5,052 SB when un-toned AU55 PCGS CAC are selling for $3,642. AU53 CAC non-toned $2,115 01/17 HA. We can see fierce competition for this coin, given its eye appeal, color and patina. A superb piece.
