This desirable 1804 Quarter Eagle with the distinctive 14-star reverse, represents one of the more challenging early federal gold issues, with a mintage of just 2,827 pieces and an estimated surviving population of approximately 147 examples. Certified AU53 by PCGS and approved by CAC, it sits solidly among the more visually appealing examples known at the grade level. The dies used for this issue are shared with the dime of the same year, and the 14-star reverse represents the scarcer and more sought-after die marriage in the denomination. The coin’s surfaces display an appealing and well-preserved early-gold character, combining a warm medium yellow-gold base with soft greenish nuances. Subtle remnants of prooflike texture remain close to the central devices, a feature occasionally seen on early die states of this variety. The luster is subdued but still visible, largely concentrated in protected areas where satiny frost and delicate cartwheel activity persist. This exact example last sold for $31,200 11/25 SB as the only CAC approved example at the grade with 12 finer. For any cabinet focused on early gold series completion, Draped Bust quarter eagles by marriage, or high-grade pre-Classic issues, this offering represents a meaningful acquisition opportunity—one that is seldom available and unlikely to reappear quickly.
