This 1802/1 Draped Bust Quarter Eagle stands as one of the most elusive offerings in early United States gold coinage, with a tiny mintage of just 3,035 pieces and an estimated 162 survivors in all grades. The boldly punched overdate is immediately evident and adds further significance to a coin that is already considered a trophy-level rarity within the Draped Bust gold series. In Mint State, appearances are exceptionally scarce, and at the MS63 level—especially with CAC approval—examples occupy a very narrow tier at the upper end of the known population. In fact, across every date for the type there are only 5 CAC approved in MS63 - ALL DATES! This piece presents outstanding visual balance, featuring original and softly frosted surfaces with active satiny cartwheel movement across both sides. The color is highly appealing and unquestionably original, displaying a warm medium yellow-gold base with deeper honey and soft orange-gold accents. With no recorded CAC sale in MS63 however, non-CAC MS63 have sold for $79,300 01/26 HA with a Buy It Now Price for $99,000, 1804 $2.5 MS63 PCGS $114,000 01/24 HA, 1806/4 $2.5 MS63 PCGS for $126,000 08/25 HA and a 1805 $2.5 MS63 PCGS for $111,000 08/25 SB. The only relevant comp was more common date 1807 $2.5 MS63 PCGS CAC for $156,000 04/22 SB, 4 years ago. Today with a PCGS Price Guide of $160,000 and understanding the important and difference of CAC on early gold, this coin represents an exceptional opportunity for advanced collectors given it is likely one of the finest for the type.
