1866–1907 Liberty Head $10 Eagle – With Motto | Classic U.S. Gold Coinage with “IN GOD WE TRUST”
The Liberty Head $10 Eagle was modified in 1866 with the addition of the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST, prominently displayed on a ribbon above the eagle on the reverse. This change created a distinct “With Motto” subtype, which remained in production through the end of the series in 1907. Aside from the motto addition, the design continued to feature Christian Gobrecht’s timeless Liberty portrait on the obverse and a powerful Heraldic Eagle on the reverse.
Minted continuously at the Philadelphia Mint, the type was also struck at San Francisco, with Carson City joining in 1870. New Orleans eagles were produced from 1879 to 1883, with additional dates later in the series. The Denver Mintissued Liberty Head Eagles in 1906 and 1907, just before the introduction of the Saint-Gaudens design.
Collectors will find ample availability in circulated grades, from Very Fine through About Uncirculated, particularly for later-date Philadelphia and San Francisco issues. Uncirculated examples—especially from the final decade of production—are also accessible. However, Superb Gems (MS65 and above) are notably rare, making them prized acquisitions for advanced collectors and registry set competitors.
Proofs were struck in limited numbers at the Philadelphia Mint throughout the series and remain rare, with most surviving examples appearing only in major auctions or elite collections.
The 1866–1907 With Motto Liberty Head Eagle combines historical significance with widespread availability, making it a foundational type for both beginner and seasoned collectors building a U.S. gold type set or investing in classic pre-1933 gold.
