The 1878 Liberty Head $10 eagle was minted during a period of strong gold circulation in post–Civil War America, when gold coins were heavily used in commerce and international trade. The 1878 $10 was struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 73,780 pieces and an estimated surviving population of roughly 700 coins. This Choice Mint State example displays vivid rose-gold coloration complemented by frosted loud mint luster on both sides. The luster is satiny rather than reflective and flows smoothly through the fields and across the devices. Last public MS63 PCGS CAC sale was 6 years ago for $6,600 02/20 HA, whilst more recently a MS63+ PCGS CAC sold for $9,000 04/22 SB, comparing this example to the plus example we can clearly see which is better. Having sold the Single Finest 1878 $10 MS65 PCGS CAC, we can clearly state this example is an exceptional example destined for a top set.
