One of the rarest and finest Proof Jefferson Nickels, 1939 5C Proof Reverse of 1938. A spectacular modern issue, 1939 5c proof reverse of 1938 is distinguished by soft lines on the steps of Monticello as well some other key details omitted for this rare date. A proof and important type that is a different coin and billed separately as its own type, showing the "wavy" steps on Monticello as seen in 1938. This is a truly Superb representative that has a colorful, rainbow-like toning scheme at the peripheries on each side. Beautifully original, there are no mentionable marks or spots as one would expect on 68+. This example is one of two 68+ certified by PCGS with none finer. Even as a date there are no other PR68+ for the Reverse of 1940 and as well as the P-Mint Business Strike 1938 Jefferson Nickel. Simply put, this is one of two finest certified 1938 Jefferson Nickels regardless of Proof or Business Strike designation. However, whilst two are certified, this is the ONLY CAC 68+. Above PR67, this coin becomes tough and rare. At PR68 CAC examples have sold between $4,000-$7,000, a black and white example that has sold for $4,000 & $5,000, whilst a toned example last selling for $7,200. The present example is a newly graded piece with this example as the ONLY CAC certified 68+, so this by all rights this is the finest 1938 5C Jefferson Head Nickel and the only CAC at that level. Whilst PCGS suggest a Price Guide of $17,500 with no apr, we see 1939 10C PR68+ NON CAC selling for $32,000, a pop 3, whilst the base 68 sells for $1,000-$2,000. By all the rights this CAC approved finest should and at a public auction should bring a new record price as one of the finest for a top type set.
