The 1921 Saint-Gaudens double eagle stands as one of the most important and elusive issues in the entire series, and this PCGS-certified, CAC-approved example represents the lowest graded and most accessible CAC-approved specimen of this legendary date. The obverse displays Liberty with strong remaining definition throughout the head, torso, and flowing gown, framed by boldly rendered stars and crisp peripheral lettering, all set against warm orange-gold surfaces that retain pleasing natural luster beneath a subtly matte, original skin. A rich golden hue dominates the fields, with areas of darker, crusted “dirty old gold” coloration tucked between the devices, reinforcing the coin’s unquestionable originality and long-term preservation. Light circulation wear is evenly distributed and free of distracting marks, allowing the sculptural depth of Saint-Gaudens’ design to remain visually commanding. The reverse is equally impressive, with the flying eagle sharply outlined against the sunburst rays, the wing feathers and body contours clearly defined for the grade, and the fields exhibiting the same consistent coloration and smooth texture seen on the obverse. Struck late in 1921, nearly the entire mintage was held in government vaults and later destroyed following the Gold Recall Act of 1933, leaving an estimated 145 survivors in all grades, with more than half of those circulated. High-grade examples are virtually unobtainable, with MS64 CAC examples exceeding $500,000 and MS65 CAC pieces surpassing the million-dollar level. With a PCGS population of just 2 examples at this grade, a CAC population of 1 at this level, and only 11 CAC-approved coins known in total, this freshly surfaced, visually compelling double eagle represents a singular opportunity to acquire a cornerstone 1921 Saint-Gaudens at a fraction of the cost required for finer certified examples, while retaining all of the historical weight and visual presence that define this iconic issue.
