Out of a mintage exceeding 8 million, only around 6,000 examples of the 1918-D Buffalo Nickel are estimated to have survived—a mere 0.072% survival rate. While it is comparably rare in circulated grades alongside other Denver issues from 1914-1919, it becomes particularly scarce in Gem condition, as demonstrated by this piece. Showing a solid strike, semi-frosty luster, and an attractive iridescent glow, high-grade examples like this are especially sought after by collectors. When held in hand, its superior quality is immediately evident, well above the usual for this issue. The delicate toning complements the coin’s lustrous, satiny surfaces, making it a high-end piece that would attract strong bids at auction. CAC-approved coins in this grade are rare, with higher-graded examples seldom appearing for sale.
