This 1913-S Saint-Gaudens $20 Double Eagle, a Type 3 issue with Motto, represents one of the more elusive and compelling entries in the early 20th-century gold series. With a limited mintage of just 34,000 pieces—third lowest among all Saint-Gaudens business strikes—and an estimated survival of only 5,583 coins, this San Francisco issue is a perennial favorite among advanced collectors. The present example is a Choice Mint State survivor, notable for its radiant cartwheel luster and striking visual appeal. The obverse is awash in a warm, sunlit golden-yellow base, accentuated by deeper orange-gold highlights along Liberty’s gown and torch, with subtle reddish-gold undertones nestled near the stars and sun rays—hallmarks of natural cabinet toning. A soft frost blankets Liberty’s figure, providing visual contrast against the satiny, smooth fields. The eagle’s wings are finely frosted and boldly defined, floating above an uninterrupted sea of rich color and smooth texture. Free of significant marks and boasting superior originality, this coin stands well above the majority of known survivors.
