Indian Quarter Eagle
The 1911-D Indian $2.50 Quarter Eagle is the undisputed key date of the series, celebrated as one of the most significant 20th-century U.S. gold coin rarities. With an original mintage of just 55,680 coins, it is far rarer than the next lowest mintage issue, the 1914, which saw a production of 240,000 coins. This dramatic disparity, coupled with the series’ typical mintages of 400,000 to 500,000, underscores the 1911-D’s exceptional scarcity. While examples in Mint State grades of MS-60 to MS-62 are attainable with some effort, higher grades like MS-63 and above are exceedingly rare, making them coveted by advanced collectors. Coins featuring the "Strong D" mintmark, sharply defined and clearly visible, are particularly sought after, offering enhanced visual and numismatic appeal. As Denver Mint’s first production of quarter eagles in 1911 this coin has historical importance to the issue. Featuring vibrant golden-yellow coloration with exceptional surface for the grade, the eye appeal of this piece should be noted. With a PCGS Price Guide of $21,500 and CAC Guide of $16,500 ( for non-plus) and the last sale 3 years ago at $15,000 10/22 HA whilst a more recent lower graded non-plus MS63 PCGS CAC sold for $15,600 11/23 HA, we can confidently say that the market for CAC Indian $2.5 in higher grade has seen increased demand and strength.
