1909-S $10 MS64+ PCGS CAC EX HALF DOME

The 1909-S Indian Eagle saw heavy commerce use, and is typically seen in less than Mint State grades. Many pieces entered West Coast circulation, with PCGS grading examples as low as Fine 12. Because of the year, this 1909-S $10 has been a favorite among Date and Type Set collectors. The finest 1909-S $10 almost all came from a group that surfaced in the 1970s; however this MS64+ PCGS CAC EX HALF DOME captures a desirable balance of both quality and value. It is sharply struck with well-defined design features, no hits on the field, its surface is that of a GEM, and displays bright luster. Only a few specks are noted on the reverse, aside from that this looks like a stone cold GEM in our opinion. The 1909-S is much scarcer than its mintage suggests, and specimens of Choice grade or higher are rare and highly sought-after. Frankly speaking, comparing this present example to any other 1909-S $10 graded MS64+ PCGS CAC or even any other MS65 PCGS (non-CAC) shows clearly the difference that this ex Half Dome example is by far the best on the market. We see one auction sale for a MS64+ PCGS CAC which sold via Heritage for $13,200 08/2023. That example has a big contact mark right on the cheek, which also possibly looks like a mint-made strike through. Either way it is detracting and this example outshines it by several factors. No MS65 PCGS CAC 1909-S $10 has ever sold publicly and finding one would be impossible and nearly triple or quadruple the price.
