This 1909/8 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is a highly distinctive and historically important variety — the only known overdate in the entire series — making it an essential acquisition for advanced collectors of early 20th-century U.S. gold coinage. The variety arose when a Mint engraver mistakenly used a 1908-dated hub to prepare a 1909 working die; after correcting the error with the proper 1909 hub, remnants of the earlier date remained boldly visible. Typically, such an oversight would have been caught during Chief Engraver Charles Barber’s die inspection, but for unknown reasons it entered production. By 1910, a new master hub eliminated further overdates, underscoring the Mint’s swift corrective measures. While the 1909/8 commands only a modest premium in circulated grades, it becomes a true condition rarity in Mint State, with premiums rising sharply in MS64 and finer. This near-Gem example displays superior visual appeal, with a vibrant yellow-gold luster accented by green and lilac overtones and natural toning near the rims that speaks to its originality. The overall luster is vibrant and uniform, enhancing its bold, artistic design. With only three CAC-approved examples known in higher grades (one MS65 and two MS66, including a $336,000 sale in 2022 in MS66), and the last MS 64 CAC+ example realizing $20,562 11/16 HA, this piece represents an exceptional opportunity at the upper end of the condition census. Its remarkable preservation, historical intrigue, and rarity in high grades firmly establish the 1909/8 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle as an indispensable cornerstone of any advanced U.S. gold collection.
