The 1909 Indian Head Cent Proof stands out as a challenging date in its series with a limited mintage of only 2,175. Notably, this example is the sole CAC-stickered coin in its year-grade designation at CAC and finest at that. The year 1909 marked the conclusion of this immensely popular series. Having dealt with numerous Indian Head Cent Proof coins, our current admiration is reserved for this example. Distinguished by its exceptional attractiveness, this coin stands out from the typical glossy brown and dull appearance of most BN (Brown) proof coins. Its unique toning, featuring a thick and naturally developed patina, gives the impression that it was meticulously painted on over the years. Under the light, the colors reveal themselves in a mesmerizing kaleidoscope. Lady Liberty shines with reflective fields exhibiting powder blue, fire engine red, golden straw yellow, and electric purple toning. The reverse evokes the beauty of a desert sunset, with the central fabric of the coin illuminated in warm auburn and creamy orange tones. This is a very tough date to find with this eye appeal and color. There is no sale for a CAC coin in PR66 BN, but an example that was not CAC approved sold 6 years ago for $1,560 08/18 HA. Even in lower grade PR65 BN PCGS EEPS, we sold a toned example last year for more. This present example is one of the best Indian Proof 1909 within the BN designation and is worthy of inclusion in any set.
