Indian Half Eagle
1908-S Indian Head $5 Gold Half Eagle is a scarce Semi-Key Date. Only 82,000 pieces were struck at the San Francisco Mint, making this the third-lowest mintage in the Indian Half Eagle series, following the 1909-O and 1911-D issues. The 1908-S Indian Head Half Eagle was produced during the first year of Pratt’s incuse design, which replaced the traditional raised relief seen on earlier U.S. coinage. The San Francisco Mint struck only half eagles of this design, making its issues especially significant to collectors. As such, 1908-S is a highly sought-after semi-key date for Indian Half Eagle collectors. Among CAC-approved coins, there are just 4 examples certified in this grade. This example exhibits rich, original deep honey-gold surfaces. Smooth, attractive surfaces for the grade, with only a light touch of friction prevents this premium-quality (PQ) example from Mint State classification. The coin retains partial luster, particularly in the recessed areas, enhancing the boldness of the design. No AU55 PCGS CAC has sold, though CAC & PCGS have price guide at $3,500.
