1900-O/CC $1 MS64 PCGS CAC
Morgan Dollar
The 1900-O/CC Silver Dollar is a rare occurrence within the Morgan Dollar series. The coin displays a New Orleans mintmark punched over a Carson City Mintmark. This re-punched mint mark of sort is peculiar since the two facilities are located far apart. According to PCGS Coinfacts, the Philadelphia Mint crafted all of the dies that were distributed to all the branch mints, including the O and CC marked dies. Moreover, the Carson City Mint ceased to produce silver dollars after 1893. Thus, there was no requirement for Philadelphia to deliver dies there in 1900. Remarkably, the misprint showed up on different dies. Could these be dies left over from earlier years or was it an engraver's blunder by imprinting a CC mintmark onto some reverse dies in 1900? No one knows. It is no doubt an intriguing twist in our US Numismatic history. The present blast white example is PQ for MS64 grade with exceptionally clean surface. With non-CAC MS64 PCGS coins selling between $1,400-$1,500 in 2023 and the only CAC sale this year was for a NGC MS64 that sold for $1,500 02/23 HA. We feel a MS64 PCGS CAC example represents great value considering CAC Price Guide is $2,070.
