The 1897-S Quarter Dollar is a rare San Francisco date in the series with only 2,000 examples estimated today in all grades. This present example is richly toned on both sides with the obverse featuring a vibrant peripheral target toning. The obverse edge is surrounded by electric colors creeping in from the outside. You will see most colors of the rainbow but featured are the lime greens and sunburst yellows. The reverse features a lilac center outlined by straw yellow edges with some blues between. The toning is even more prominent than the close up image. A typical untoned, non-CAC specimen might command a starting price of $1,000. However, given this remarkable eye-catching allure, vibrant hues, and lively toning, this coin represents an extraordinary bargain. No CAC example in the surrounding grades have sold in the past 7 years, except for 2 grades lower a VF35 PCGS CAC untoned for $2,120 12/22 DL. Being a rarer date in the series but an affordable grade with original colorful toning this coin will not be available for very long.
