From a mintage of 69 ever minted, only 20-25 are known today of which 6-8 pieces are impaired, and only 1 cac is known in higher Deep Cameo grade. At pr62 dcam, there is only one auction record which was for a non-cac piece that sold 11 years ago for $14,375 05/2009 HA. It is not unimaginable to see which dignitary, member of congress or vip clientele these were made for. The last 1897 $10 proof gold, in any grade or in designation, sold over 6 years ago and as such only a few comps would naturally exist. Regardless of the number of survivors this is the penultimate piece for collectors who would typically have to pay multiples for a cac liberty proof $10 piece let alone one with boldly contrasted fields over sharply struck devices. The color among anything else represents perhaps one of the finer qualities of this date as the devices oozes with yellow peel gold.
