The 1896 Indian Cent Proof is a standout survivor from the late-19th-century United States proof coinage, boasting a remarkably small mintage of just 1,862 pieces. Both sides display a dominant medium brown foundation accented by vivid salmon-pink and subtle olive-blue undertones, all set upon silky-smooth surfaces with pinpoint striking detail and sharply rendered devices. The color presentation is richly layered and naturally evolved, with the obverse showing Liberty’s portrait bathed in magenta-rose and violet hues that deepen to plum and wine-purple in the recesses, while the open fields glow with rose, pink, and lavender iridescence. Delicate flashes of teal, sea-green, and pale aqua appear along the peripheries and around the lettering, adding depth and movement as the coin is rotated under light. With a CAC population of just 3 approved examples and none finer, and the last CAC sale selling 6 years ago for $1,920 12/20 SB. Today the most relevant comp would be a 1905 1C PR65 BN PCGS CAC with similar color but in lower grade that sold for $2,880 04/24.
