#3 on the Barber Dimes Census by Jeff Ambio, this 1895 Barber Dime stands as the rarest circulation strike of the series from the Philadelphia Mint, with a remarkably low mintage of fewer than one million coins—the only instance this occurred for the type at this mint. Struck during a period when collector interest heavily favored Proof issues, the majority of these dimes quietly entered circulation and saw extensive wear. As a result, Mint State survivors are exceptionally rare. The specimen offered here, graded PCGS MS66+ and certified by CAC, is among the best and firmly within the Condition Census. Displaying fully struck design elements, with sharply defined detail throughout Liberty’s portrait, crisp legends, and bold date, the coin and its surfaces glow with a vibrant frosty luster, enhanced by delicate champagne-gold and pastel rose toning. Most importantly, for the 1895 10C issue finding examples that are superb gem and not dark is incredibly rare. Free of distracting marks and beautifully preserved, this coin’s eye appeal and originality are unmatched for the issue. Last recorded auction of a PCGS MS66+ CAC example realized $7,800 01/25 HA. With a population of only 2 in MS66+ (with 8 finer), and just 5 finer at CAC, this example from the Gardner collection represents PQ quality.
