This 1894 Liberty Head $20 Double Eagle is a sharply struck and visually engaging example of the Type 3 “With Motto” subtype, distinguished by the denomination spelled out as “TWENTY DOLLARS” on the reverse. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint from a mintage of 1,368,940 pieces, this issue saw the vast majority of its face value—over $27 million—shipped abroad during a period of intense international distrust of silver coinage. The global rejection of the Morgan dollar fueled demand for gold-based settlement, and as a result, most 1894 double eagles were exported shortly after issue. In recent decades, many have been repatriated, but most survivors reside in the lower Mint State range of MS60 to MS62. Choice examples in gem condition remain scarce and in steady demand. CAC-approved specimens in MS63 have realized $4,560 03/23 while MS64 CAC examples brought as much as $5,520 01/25 HA, underscoring collector interest in superior quality. This piece exhibits a vibrant medium-gold obverse with mellow olive and honey-gold accents radiating from the devices, particularly around Liberty’s hair and coronet. The satiny fields are subtly reflective, with faint friction marks and a scattering of abrasions in the left field—typical for the issue but minimal in visual impact. The design elements remain crisply defined, with lingering frost in protected recesses enhancing depth and visual texture. The reverse mirrors this rich coloration, featuring a bright golden core with deeper amber highlights flanking the shield and eagle’s wings. The heraldic eagle is sharply rendered, its feather detail unmarred by significant wear, while light haziness in the rays and motto adds dimension. Despite minor hairlines in the open fields, natural cartwheel luster remains uninterrupted across the surface, attesting to the coin’s preservation. With a PCGS population of just 92 finer and only 34 examples surpassing this level in CAC-approved condition, this 1894 Double Eagle presents a premium opportunity for collectors of 19th-century U.S. gold. Its originality, eye appeal, and scarcity in gem condition position it as a worthy acquisition for a high-end type set or Liberty Head gold cabinet.
