The 1891-CC $10 Liberty Head eagle is a desirable Carson City Mint issue from the later years of the facility’s operation, a period when gold coinage was tapering off and surviving examples are encountered less frequently than earlier CC emissions. While this date is among the more obtainable in the series, true Mint State coins remain scarce in the marketplace. This example is actually is a well known Repunched Mintmark variety - 1891-CC/CC $10 FS-501 and is extremely well struck. The coin displays some light abrasions in the fields but does not account for an MS60 grade in our opinion. The underlying surfaces retain bright, frosty luster with attractive orange-gold and subtle rose-gold highlights. Housed in an early PCGS rattler holder, this CAC-approved example with a CAC value of $4,750 for an MS60 doesn't account for the rattler, coins quality and eye appeal. With a modest mintage of 103,732 pieces and an estimated survival of approximately 3,333 examples across all grades, this issue remains scarce and increasingly desirable today. The last PCGS CAC sale was another rattler that sold in 2023 for $4,320 11/23 SB - that coin has no where near the charm, skin or quality that this does. Today CAC has a Price Guide of $4,600 for a normal CAC example, but in truth the spread between grades are minute even a AU58 PCGS CAC example last sold for $3,904 03/26 HA.
